In the mid-’60s, fed up with the formulaic restrictions, censorious nature, and onerous denial of creator’s rights in mainstream comics, cartoonist Wallace Wood boldy decided to launch his own magazine — witzend. witzend soon became an essential outlet of unfettered artistic freedom for Wood and his fellow cartoonists, including such comics luminaries as Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Gray Morrow, Reed Crandall, Steve Ditko, Art Spiegelman, Vaughn Bodé, Alex Toth, Howard Chaykin, and Bernie Wrightson.
