In the midst of the Civil War, the Commissariat of Propaganda of Catalonia inaugurated its children's collection with the Auca of the Catalan boy, anti-fascist and humane, with texts in Catalan, Spanish, French and English, as an artistic and poetic response to the extreme difficulties suffered by the Second Republic. In forty-eight two-color vignettes, L'Auca reviews the life of a model kid, Germà, from his birth on July 19, until he is sent to the front in Madrid. Through couplets, by the photographer and editor Pere Català i Pic, Germà spreads advice and morals in the everyday framework of what was considered to be "a good, republican and Catalan man".
